Conservative Treatment of Veins

Conservative Treatment of Veins While there are many excellent treatments available today for eliminating varicose and spider veins, some patients may not require or desire a procedure but still want to manage their venous condition. In these situations, conservative treatment may be the best approach to manage symptoms and prevent future problems.

Some of the conservative options which exist for the treatment of varicose veins include:

Compression Stockings

These special stockings offer more support at the feet, loosening as they move up the leg. The purpose of compression stockings is to promote the flow of blood back up the legs to the heart. Compression stockings come in a wide range of strengths, sizes and styles, so it is best to get a doctor’s recommendation on the best type of support stockings for your needs.

At Beach Cities Vein and Laser Center, we can help to provide you with the optimal compression stockings to serve your lifestyle and need.

Medication

Over-the-counter pain and anti-inflammatory medications, as well as homeopathic remedies, may be recommended to help you manage the discomfort sometimes associated with varicose veins.

Additional Conservative Measures

Some of the actions you can take to improve symptoms and/or slow the process of venous conditions include:

Increased Physical Activity

Regular walking, which consists of 20-30 minutes, 5-7 days a week, is one of the most effective ways to improve symptoms of varicose veins.

Weight Loss

Excess weight puts pressure on the veins of the lower extremities, which may increase the likelihood for the development of varicose veins. By achieving and maintaining a healthy weight, symptoms of varicose veins may be more effectively managed and the appearance of additional veins might be prevented.

Choosing Footwear

We typically advise patients with venous conditions to avoid wearing shoes with high heels. These shoes may place additional pressure on the veins by interfering with the normal pumping action in the lower legs. Thus, frequent wearing of high heels can contribute to the development or symptoms of varicose veins.

Elevation

Elevating the legs above the heart, 10-15 minutes at a time, at least once or twice daily, can promote healthier blood flow in the lower legs and help provide relief for symptomatic varicose veins.
