Ultrasound – The Key to Imaging for DVT

Sudden onset of leg swelling should raise concern for the possibility of DVT (deep venous thrombosis), a potentially life-threatening problem. Diagnosis of DVT is typically made with a lower extremity ultrasound.  This exam is crucial not only to establishing a correct diagnosis, but also helps determine the appropriate treatment plan for the patient.

DVT

DVT is a clot in the deep veins, most commonly the legs.  DVT is serious due to the risk of the clots making their way to the lungs (known as pulmonary embolus).  When a DVT is discovered, treatment must begin as soon as possible, usually by taking blood thinners.

Ultrasound is utilized not only to diagnose DVT, but also to follow its progress. Typically patients are followed routinely with periodic ultrasounds during the course of their anti-coagulation. Ultimately the skill and knowledge of the person performing and interpreting the ultrasound are critical to long-term results, and in determining when to stop taking the medication.
