Endovenous Laser Therapy: A Popular Treatment Choice

endovenous laser therapy

The presence of varicose veins is something that can cause you to look around for the best treatment options to eliminate them. Plus, they can produce symptoms that will make you uncomfortable for much of your day. Fortunately, minimally-invasive treatments like endovenous laser therapy exist that can make those varicose veins a thing of the past.

Varicose veins develop in the legs, primarily because the blood is not passing through the vessels sufficiently, typically due to leaky valves in the veins. This causes it to back up and start to pool in the veins. They will start to enlarge because of the added pressure the pooling places against the walls of the veins. When these veins enlarge, they can be visible in a couple of different ways. First, they can appear as blue streaks that can be seen under the skin. They can also cause bulging of the skin in ways that resemble twisted cords. The discoloration and the bulging are enough to make people look for ways to have these veins removed.

Varicose veins can also cause things like aching, itching and burning, especially late in the day after spending much of the time standing. If you sit in one position for prolonged periods of time, you might experience the same symptoms. Numbness and tingling are often present too, along with swelling around the ankles and in the lower portions of the legs.

Endovenous laser treatment is one of the most popular methods for the elimination of these insufficient veins. It is a comfortable, outpatient treatment that is highly successful and relatively inexpensive. The procedure is done through the use of a tiny fiber. After a small amount of local anesthesia is provided, the laser fiber is advanced into the problematic vein under ultrasound guidance. As the laser fiber is pulled down the vein, it emits energy to the walls of the vein from the inside. This causes the vein to close. The tissue that remains of the vessel will begin to be absorbed by the body until, over time, it is no longer visible. Blood that previously flowed through the treated vessels will be rerouted through other, healthier veins on its way back to the lungs.
