About the Procedure
IPL photofacial is performed as an outpatient procedure. After application of a topical anesthetic lotion, pulses of light are administered to the treatment area via a handheld device. The device is then moved from spot to spot along the skin. The procedure is well-tolerated, with patients reporting a snapping sensation as each site is treated.
The procedure usually takes 20-30 minutes to complete, depending on the size of the treatment area. After the procedure, your skin may feel like it has a mild sunburn, which may persist for a day or two. Sunscreen is applied to the treated area immediately after the procedure to provide protection to the treated skin. In addition, cold packs may be utilized after the procedure, and may be repeated for the first couple of days , to relieve discomfort and reduce swelling in the treatment area.
What to Expect Afterward
You can expect to return to regular activities the same day as your IPL treatment. Application of makeup, vigorous scrubbing of the skin, and exfoliation treatments are discouraged until skin redness subsides. Results are generally seen within three to four weeks after treatment, with full results taking up to eight weeks to appear. Typically three to six treatments are necessary to achieve desired results. With proper skincare, the results of IPL treatment can be dramatic and may last for years.
