What is Microphlebectomy?

Microphlebectomy

One common complaint among our patients is the appearance of varicose veins. These unsightly veins are most commonly found in the feet and legs because walking upright or standing increases the pressure on veins found in your lower body.

Varicose veins are merely a cosmetic annoyance for many people. For others, they can cause discomfort and aching pain. They can also lead to other problems and indicate an elevated risk of additional circulatory problems. Fortunately, there is a treatment available for varicose veins.

Microphlebectomy for Varicose Veins

Microphlebectomy is a medical procedure for the treatment of unattractive, painful varicose veins found near the surface of the skin. The procedure is performed on an outpatient basis and is considered the best treatment for veins that cannot be treated with sclerotherapy or are too small to treat successfully and safely using lasers.

How Microphlebectomy Works

The procedure involves creating very small incisions to excise vein sections that are dysfunctional and causing pain and bulging. When these vein sections are removed, the remaining vein sections will clot and permanently eliminate the purplish, bulging areas.

Benefits of Microphlebectomy

Microphlebectomy is superior to other procedures in a number of ways. Microphlebectomy is minimally-invasive. Also, only local anesthesia is required. Little to no downtime is involved, meaning you may resume your daily life immediately after your procedure.

The Procedure

The first step takes place when our doctor marks the treatment area to designate where the tiny incisions should be made. Next, the area to be treated will receive a local anesthetic to numb it. When the vein location is numb, the doctor will then create some tiny incisions along the vein path to be excised. The problematic vein is then removed. After the procedure, a special dressing is placed on the treated area. The procedure typically takes between 30 to 60 minutes to complete.

Microphlebectomy Recovery

Patients are normally able to resume their daily activities immediately after their procedure. It is recommended that you do some light exercise like walking, but vigorous physical exercise should be avoided for about one week. Dressings or compression stockings are normally worn for a week after the procedure.

Your Results

You should see visible results immediately after your procedure, and they should continue to grow more noticeable with time. You should expect no scarring since the procedure only involves making tiny incisions.
