What is Radiofrequency Ablation?

Radiofrequency Ablation

Radiofrequency Ablation (RFA) is a minimally-invasive procedure that uses medium frequency alternating current to ablate or remove dysfunctional biological tissue. Patients usually only require a local anesthetic or mild sedation for the procedure. It is used to treat varicose veins, tumors, heart issues, arthritis pain, lower back and neck pain, skin lesions and obstructive sleep apnea.

RFA for varicose veins is well-tolerated by most patients. It is often used instead of vein stripping, which had been the main treatment for years. The vein is targeted by the radiofrequency so that it collapses and ceases to function. The blood will naturally pass through more healthy veins, and the ablated vein will gradually be absorbed by the surrounding tissue.

Radiofrequency Ablation has produced excellent cosmetic results that can last for up to four to ten years. The original RFA treatment for varicose veins was approved by the U.S. Federal Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 1999.

Once of the advantages of Radiofrequency Ablation is that when compared to other vein treatments, very little downtime is involved. The patient is free to walk around and resume most daily activities immediately after the procedure. This makes it a convenient treatment for people with busy schedules and lifestyles.

The Radiofrequency Ablation procedure is done in the convenience of our office in El Segundo. In most cases, the entire procedure takes under an hour to complete. This does depend on the unique situation, however.

Radiofrequency Ablation is often most effective when used in combination with other procedures. For example, it is often used with sclerotherapy or microphlebectomy for optimal results.

Although this procedure is only minimally-invasive, the best candidates are in good overall health. As with any medical procedure, the better health the individual is in, the better the results will be.
