Intense Pulsed Light Therapy, also known as IPL or photofacial rejuvenation, is an amazing non-invasive procedure that utilizes light energy to eliminate skin blemishes and discolorations. IPL is effective in treating a wide range of pigmented skin lesions, including age spots, sun damage, freckles, and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. In addition IPL is useful for treatment of vascular lesions such as rosacea, angiomas and the tiniest of spider veins. IPL is also effective for permanent hair reduction and works to help eliminate the appearance of fine lines on the face.
While IPL is most commonly used on the face, it can be used anywhere, including the neck, chest, and hands. Treatment involves little discomfort and requires no downtime afterward.
About the Procedure
IPL therapy is performed as an outpatient procedure. After application of a topical anesthetic lotion, pulses of light are administered to the treatment area via a handheld device. The device is then moved from spot to spot along the skin. The procedure is well-tolerated, with patients reporting a snapping sensation as each site is treated.
The procedure usually takes 20-30 minutes to complete, depending on the size of the treatment area. After the procedure, your skin may feel like it has a mild sunburn, which may persist for a day or two. Cold packs are applied immediately after the procedure, and may be repeated for the first couple of days to relieve discomfort and reduce swelling in the treatment area.
What to Expect Afterward
You can expect to return to regular activities the same day as your IPL treatment. Application of makeup, vigorous scrubbing of the skin, and exfoliation treatments are discouraged until skin redness subsides. Results are generally seen within three to four weeks after treatment, with full results taking up to eight weeks to appear. Typically three to six treatments are necessary to achieve desired results. With proper skincare, the results of IPL treatment can be dramatic and may last for years.
