What is Ultrasound Guided Sclerotherapy?
Ultrasound guided sclerotherapy is a new and exciting treatment to eliminate small to medium sized varicose veins. Utilizing the expertise of a highly trained vein specialist, a tiny needle is precisely advanced under ultrasound guidance into the varicose vein. The vein is then injected with medication which causes the vein to close. The vein is then eliminated by the body over the weeks to months ahead. Typically multiple varicose veins are treated in one session.
This minimally invasive treatment requires no incisions. It is safe, comfortable, and highly effective. While this procedure alone is enough to get rid of smaller veins, individuals with large varicose veins may need to seek a different treatment method first.
How Long Does it Take?
The entire procedure usually takes less than an hour to complete, but you should plan to set aside an additional 30 minutes right after treatment to go for a casual walk. This ensures that your blood is flowing normally. You are then free to return to work and most normal activities.
What are the Benefits of Ultrasound Guided Sclerotherapy?
- No incisions
- No scars
- No tumescent anesthesia
- No bandages (just compression stockings)
- Minimal downtime
Compared to other varicose vein removal procedures, ultrasound guided sclerotherapy has a number of unique benefits. First of all, since there are no incisions, there are no scars. This can be very important to people who are striving for the best cosmetic outcome.
Another advantage of ultrasound guided sclerotherapy is that no bandages are needed after the procedure. You just put on compression stockings and go about your daily business. Most people will not be able to tell that you had anything done.
Downtime after the procedure is minimal. Immediately after the procedure you will be asked to walk for about a half hour, to help distribute the medication in the affected veins. You can then return to work and most other normal activities immediately afterwards. While there are some minor restrictions on activity for about a week after treatment, you are soon back to doing everything that you love and is important to you.
Am I a Good Candidate?
While ultrasound guided foam sclerotherapy is an excellent treatment in many circumstances, it is not ideal for everyone. It really depends upon your anatomy, including the sizes of your varicose veins, the location of your varicose veins, and what is going on below the skin surface (as seen on ultrasound) . It also depends upon your goals, both medically and cosmetically. In general, it is not a one size fits all world and it is best to choose the treatment that most fulfills your needs and benefits you.
During your consultation appointment, Dr. Rayman will examine your varicose veins, as well as your current state of health and medical history when helping you to decide if ultrasound guided sclerotherapy is right for you.
