Radiofrequency Ablation (a.k.a. RFA, Venefit) is a minimally-invasive treatment that is used to eliminate the source of varicose veins in the leg. It is an easy, safe, and comfortable procedure. RFA is performed in the office, and takes less than an hour to complete. You’ll walk to the car after the procedure, and have very little down time. Best of all – most often it is covered by insurance.
About the Procedure (RFA)
Ultrasound guidance is utilized to insert a small catheter directly into the affected vein. You’ll be given a local anesthetic to ensure comfort throughout the procedure. The catheter is utilized to deliver radiofrequency heat energy to the vein walls. The vein then closes, stopping the blood flow to the varicose veins. The catheter is then removed and a bandage is applied. You’ll then walk to your car.
What to Expect after RFA
Recovery time after RFA is minimal, with most patients returning to regular activities shortly thereafter. To promote healthy blood flow and healing, you’ll be advised to wear compression stockings for two weeks after removal of the bandages. Results of RFA are seen by ultrasound immediately after the procedure. Symptoms typically improve dramatically within a few days, as the discomfort you previously experienced due to varicose veins disappears.
RFA may be used in conjunction with other procedures, such as Microphlebectomies and/or Ultrasound Guided Sclerotherapy, to completely eliminate all of the varicose veins. RFA demonstrates an initial 98-100% success rate, with a 90-95% success rate 5 years after treatment.
