Radiofrequency ablation is a minimally-invasive treatment in which our specialist uses heat to remove varicose veins. The heat affects and closes the varicose veins in the legs so that they gradually dry up and disappear. Varicose veins are the result of poor blood circulation usually from the legs back to the heart. This condition is called venous insufficiency and occurs when the valves in the veins become weak and do not help push the blood along. The blood pools in the veins, causing them to become swollen and look bulging and twisted. They are very unsightly, but can be easily treated.
Radiofrequency energy affects the inside wall of the vein. This causes the vein to break down. First, a thin tube is inserted into the vein. The radiofrequency is directed through the tube. We do this in the office with a local anesthetic. There is virtually no recovery time, and you will be able to walk right after the treatment. You may be asked to wear compression stockings for a few weeks. Radiofrequency ablation is effective in 97 percent of the people treated.
When you have a consultation with our specialist, you should mention any medications you are taking, including herbal supplements, and tell the doctor if you have any allergies. You may be asked to stop taking aspirin or other anti-inflammatory drugs or blood thinners for about two weeks before the procedure.
When the vein is being closed, there is usually no discomfort. You should avoid prolonged sitting after the procedure, as well as air travel, for a few days. You can go back to work and remain active. It is not necessary to stay in bed.
The main benefits to having radiofrequency ablation varicose vein treatment are:
• No surgical incision is needed. The tiny opening required for inserting the tube into the vein does not even need to be stitched closed
• Better results than from vein stripping surgery
• Few or no complications
• No scarring
• It is not invasive
• The symptoms of varicose veins are relieved
