Sclerotherapy is a procedure that has been used for decades to eliminate spider and varicose veins. A solution, usually a saline solution, is injected into the vein. The solution affects the vein and makes it swell and stick together.
The vein is eventually reabsorbed into the body, a process that generally takes several weeks. Sclerotherapy is a great way to treat unsightly hand veins.
What Does the Treatment Involve?
Sclerotherapy is an outpatient procedure performed in our doctor’s office. Our specialist injects the solution into the vein. The procedure can take 15 to 45 minutes. The patient should avoid aerobic exercise for a few days after the procedure.
How Should the Patient Prepare for Treatment?
Since certain medications can interfere with the treatment, the patient will have to tell our doctor about all the medicines they take, be they prescription, over-the-counter, dietary supplements or herbs.
If the patient has to use antibiotics shortly before the procedure, they need to tell our doctor. The patient should not apply lotion to the treatment area for 24 hours before the procedure.
Who is Not a Good Candidate for Sclerotherapy?
Before the procedure, the patient will consult with our doctor to determine if they are a good candidate for sclerotherapy. People with a history of blood clots may not be good candidates; our doctor will have to determine the condition of blood vessels in the treatment area.
Women may not undergo sclerotherapy while pregnant or breastfeeding. They may undergo the procedure while using birth control pills, though.
