When you think about anti-aging cosmetic treatments, facial treatments such as neuromodulators or fillers may come to mind. However, while the skin on the face can be exposed to more UV light over the year and age faster, the skin on the hands can be equally affected. Treating yourself to a hand rejuvenation can provide many benefits that can make you feel great about your appearance.
At Beach Cities Vein & Laser Center, we want to bring a higher quality of life to our patients by using a wide range of medical and cosmetic procedures. Our hand rejuvenation services have made a big difference in many of our patients’ lives and we look forward to answering any questions you may have through a consultation.
What Causes Aging in Hands?
Loss of Skin Elasticity
Wrinkles, folds, and sagging skin on the hands can all be caused by a loss of elasticity. Elasticity comes from skin that has plenty of elastin and collagen. Throughout your body, the production of these supportive fibers diminishes as you age which can leave the skin on your hands looking more thin, fragile, and translucent.
Loss of Fat
While you may not always like fat when it is somewhere that you don’t want it, fat is important to help make your hands look more youthful. Younger hands often have more of a fat layer that separates the skin from the bones and veins and makes the hands look smoother. Your hands can lose these fat pads as you age which can make them look thin.
Age Spots
Many people forget their hands when they are applying sunscreen. This makes hands a common area for age spots to appear. Uneven pigmentation can cause the skin to look much older than it is.
Protruding Veins
Not only do veins protrude more as the fat pads on your hands decrease, but they can also grow larger. Many people don’t like the way these protruding veins look and feel like they make their hands look older.
What Are the Different Hand Rejuvenation Treatments?
Vein Removal Treatments
If you don’t like the appearance of the superficial veins in your hands, these veins can be removed using various methods. Common methods for vein removal in hands include:
- Microphlebectomies: During a microphlebectomy, small incisions are made and the veins are removed from your hand. You will only need local anesthetic and stitches will not be needed after the procedure.
- Sclerotherapy: A small amount of solution is injected into the vein. The solution will irritate the interior lining of the vein and cause it to close. Blood will then reroute to veins that aren’t as close to the surface.
- Endovenous Laser Treatment: This type of treatment uses a small fiber that is equipped with a laser. Once the fiber is inserted into the correct vein using ultrasound technology, the laser energy is delivered into the vein. The vein will close and the blood will flow through your other veins.
IPL and Laser Treatments
To help address age spots and discoloration, we can use both IPL treatments and laser treatments. IPL uses light that is broad spectrum and has different wavelengths to help remove excess melanin from the skin. If you have a dark spot, it can be targeted and destroyed by IPL treatments. Lasers, which only use one color of light, can be used to treat more specific conditions. Both can also help to stimulate the production of additional collagen in the skin and make the skin stronger and tighter.
Dermal Fillers
Dermal fillers such as Juvederm, Restylane, and Radiesse, can be used effectively to restore the lost volume from depleted fat pads. While a temporary treatment, dermal fillers can be a good way to make your hands look younger and to help minimize any wrinkles.
What Are the Benefits of Hand Rejuvenation?
Non-Invasive and No Downtime Procedures
All of our hand rejuvenation treatments are non-invasive and require limited or no downtime. Even if you get several treatments during the same appointment, you will be able to enjoy the benefits without surgery or general anesthesia. All of these treatments are outpatient procedures and can be done quickly.
Can Bring Immediate and Long-Lasting Results
Some treatments such as microphlebectomies and fillers can result in immediate effects that can make your hands look younger right away. With IPL or laser treatments, you may need several treatments before seeing results, but they can be long-lasting.
Can Reverse Skin Laxity
Hand rejuvenation services can do more than just make your hands look better. With collagen and elastin stimulation in your hands, you can help to tighten your skin and reverse some of the effects of aging.
Can Reverse Sun Damage
When age spots are treated through IPL or laser treatments, they are gone for good. However, you’ll want to prevent additional age spots from appearing by remembering to apply sunscreen to the backs of your hands any time they will be exposed to sunshine.
