An IPL photofacial is performed as a cosmetic skin treatment. Using intense pulsed light, or IPL, the skin and underlying support tissues are subjected to rapid bursts of light energy. This energy is absorbed by targeted tissues of specific tones and densities. In this way, the specialist can control which layers of skin and other tissues are absorbing energy rather than just reflecting it.
An IPL photofacial is the ideal treatment for such skin problems as wrinkling, rosacea, other forms of hyperpigmentation and acne scars. Those concerned about the appearance of their facial skin and who are wary of surgical procedures and chemical peels are encouraged to learn more about this simple, effective treatment. We provide complete consultation services for those who need more information prior to selecting an IPL photofacial as their treatment method.
What is Intense Pulsed Light?
People often confuse a photofacial with laser treatment. A laser uses a single wavelength of concentrated light energy to burn away damaged skin cells. On the other hand, an IPL instrument produces light in the broad spectrum, and this instrument is calibrated to deliver the correct wavelengths for absorption by specific tissue densities and tones. In other words, the targeted tissue will absorb only certain wavelengths because of its structure and chromophore composition.
When calibrated properly, short bursts of light energy stimulate the tissue to produce more collagen. The slight damage caused by the light energy signals a response by the body. Damaged cells are flushed away, and the new growth is healthier.
What Patients Should Expect
Before deciding on this treatment, we consult with the client and examine the skin closely. We note the thickness of the skin, how supple or brittle it is and where discolored patches are located. We then design a customized therapy program to target the problem areas.
Before an IPL photofacial, we apply a topical anesthetic to the skin. The instrument is placed next to the skin and the lamp is briefly flashed. The sensation is similar to being snapped with a rubber band. After several bursts of energy, each of which lasts only a few milliseconds, the instrument is moved to the next area to be treated. A typical session lasts only about 20 to 30 minutes.
Ongoing Treatment Sessions
Depending on the severity of the wrinkling, discoloration or scarring, we may schedule multiple treatments over the course of a month or two. Between treatments, there is no recovery period and no downtime. The client can resume normal activities immediately.
The advantages of an IPL photofacial are many and include in-house treatment with no overnight stay; the ability to treat the entire area without the use of acid chemicals or harsh abrasive materials; and no risk of side effects. There is no surgery involved, so clients need not worry about their appearance after treatment is completed.
