Just about everybody has heard the term spider veins. However, if you ask a person to describe what a spider vein is, how they form and the symptoms they create, most people would be at a loss. One reason for this is that spider veins closely mimic other infirmities that can affect the veins.
So, what are spider veins? They are veins that are dilated. They are visible on the surface of the skin and have an appearance that is similar to that of a spider web or the branches of a tree.
Most spider veins are either red or blue. They can grow on any part of the body, but you are more likely to see them on your legs and on your face.
Spider veins are not as large as varicose veins. However, it is not uncommon to see both types of veins in the same area. Varicose veins are veins that have become swollen and now are full of blood that has collected in them.
Spider veins are exceptionally common. You will see them with greater frequency in individuals who have reached 50 years of age. In most cases, these veins do not cause symptoms. However, for some individuals, they can lead to swelling, restless leg syndrome and a throbbing pain. In some extreme cases, they can even become painful, cause lesions on your skin or cause blood clots.
The primary symptom is the appearance on the skin. The vein will range in color from red to purple. You may feel some other symptoms accompanying, including a swelling or an uncomfortable feeling in your legs. You may have a rash around the vein area or a sensation of aching, cramping or throbbing.
Skin ulcers and itching around the veins are also common. While these symptoms may be frustrating, in most cases, they are not life-threatening. However, there are some symptoms that would require you to see a professional.
For example, if your spider veins are warm to the touch or they are exceptionally tender, this could be an indication of a serious infirmity that needs to be addressed. Or if your veins are causing you pain, our doctor can help you to minimize the pain, making your life more comfortable.
